Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip brings generative AI to budget phones.

Generative AI is clearly on everyone's lips lately and  has gradually found its way into modern smartphones through on-device AI processing. However, this capability has been largely limited to flagship smartphones, but will soon be available on budget devices  with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC.

The American chipmaker has just announced Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 for upper mid-range phones and it will act as an upgrade to the regular Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. Aside from incremental updates, it's the first  Qualcomm 7-series chip to feature on-device generative AI.

The new silicon offers a 15% improvement in CPU performance, but a much larger jump in graphics performance from the new Adreno GPU, a 45% improvement.Unfortunately, the improvements in power consumption  are smaller, only about 5% more than before.

The 7+ Gen 3 supports a variety of Large Language Models (LLM) as well as Large Vision Models (LVM), including Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, Gemini Nano and Zhipu ChatGLM. This means that all of these AI models can run locally on  7+ Gen 3 smartphones. , This should enable improved virtual assistants like Google Assistant, Bixby and others that should help users much more efficiently. Other AI functions such as multilingual translation and transcription are also  improved by generative AI, making content more accessible worldwide regardless of language barriers.Other technical specifications include a 4nm manufacturing process from TSMC and the Snapdragon X63 5G modem with FastConnect 7800. The CPU configuration includes a 0.6GHz main Cortex  and three low-power A520 units. runs at 1.9 GHz.The chip supports up to 4K displays on phones with a 60Hz refresh rate or QHD resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. It is also capable of handling variable refresh rates  from 1Hz to 240Hz. It supports up to 24GB LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 memory.

The OnePlus Ace 3V is expected to be the  first smartphone with the new chipset, which will be launched later today.Other OEMs  expected to launch phones with this chip include OnePlus, Realme and Sharp.
